Imitation is the sincerest etcetera

All those movies about long-haired girls popping up in a spooky fashion - such imagery is grist to the mill of advertising. Predictably, some people are complaining that this is too scary. Hah!

Check out this public information film, as in made by the UK government, specifically for children. It dates from 1973.

Those were the days, when information films for kids were meant to scare the pants off you so you never, ever, ever, did whatever it was they didn't want you to do. I still have horrible memories of the one we watched about going on railway lines. And even more so about the real-life experiences of a teacher who told us about a child who climbed an electricity pylon (OK, he was asking for trouble, but still).

Yes, I think if more kids were scared spitless of going on railways lines there'd be fewer thefts of copper cable. And I've never climbed an electricity pylon.

Very good ads. The second one was especially disturbing. I think the scariest ad I saw growing up was a commercial for Count Chocula and Frankenberry cereal :)
