For no particular reason, here's an extract from a very well-known ghost story of yesteryear/yore. Published a long time ago, anyway, and much anthologised since. Name that story and the author!

I supposed my Hermes, as he led me to the lower regions, had had a little grog, but I said nothing, and followed him.

It's often put in the classic vampire story category. I think it's not bad, though I haven't re-read it in years.

  'B. Catling, R.A. (1948-2022) was born in London. He was a poet, sculptor, filmmaker, performance artist, painter, and writer. I had never heard of B(rian) Catling when I received a review copy of this book , which comes with three intriguing postcards  'featuring photographs by Iain Sinclair and text by Alan Moore' .
