Obscure and Odd Movies for Halloween

I've watched a lot of films over the years and - inevitably - think some of them deserve to be better known. Here are a few of them, as reviewed or at least noted by me over the years:

Static - Todd Levin, 2012

A film that plays with some conventional ideas and does a fine job, for me at least. A couple having serious difficulties try to help a mysterious caller - an attractive young woman whose car has broken down. You think you know where this is going, especially when a home invasion begins. But then everything gets flipped. Some violence, here, but mostly this is a psychological/supernatural thriller.

Cursed - Yoshihiro Hoshino, 2004

Shot on video, this J-horror uses all the conventional tropes but manages to be exuberantly bonkers. A woman from a chain store firm goes to inspect a small 'mom and pop' store run by a weird couple. This is almost an anthology horror as customers at the strange store suffer a variety of nasty fates while the staff experience weird phenomena. It's available on YouTube and elsewhere. This is rather gory, especially if you are fond of crows.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe - André Øvredal 2016

Brian Cox stars with Emile Hirsch as a father-and-son coroner team, because why not? The mysterious corpse the cops bring them proves to be something special, and a bit of a menace. I think all this can be inferred from the poster above. But it works well as a creepy thriller, and the rationale of the whole thing is nicely done. It's one of those movies that warn us that the horrors of the past are never really done with, just awaiting rediscovery.
